Welcome to the Ancestral Habits newsletter☀️
Four weeks a month we explore finds related prehistoric life and culture
(middle/upper Paleolithic: ~300,000-12,500 years ago)
and the evolutionary origins of all things human!
Here’s a recap of this past week on Ancestral Habits:
🏝Things prehistoric people did every day that are considered luxuries today.
👨👩👦How old were prehistoric parents.
👵🏽Prehistoric grandmothers were the breadwinners.
Humor is prehistoric and so are memes!
I know this meme doesn’t appear to be about prehistory, but hear me out. This image illustrates a concept that I think is fundamental to anthropology and the study of prehistoric humans in general. Whoever is shining the green light might believe the shape is a square. To the one shining the red light, it’s clear that they are dealing with a circle. And for the individual shining the purple light, it is without a doubt a triangle. Our understanding of what we see, what we know and what is true depends on our view point; but it doesn’t always offer the full story. While modern technology is elucidating aspects of early human and hominin life and culture that are truly remarkable, it takes a well-rounded, diverse, multidisciplinary approach to even begin to see the full picture of our enigmatic and mysterious past.
